BAHAY NAKPIL-BAUTISTA : PAMANA SERIES 2022: Balik Aral Feb.17 150th Anniversary of GOMBURZA Martyrdom
Today, February 17, marks the 150th anniversary of the martyrdom of three priests, collectively referred to as GOMBURZA – Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora.
They were falsely accused of treason and sedition by the Spanish military tribunal and died publicly by garrote, a tragic end which became a crucial point in our history.
Church bells tolled out of outrage and grief. Their death awakened a nationalistic spirit, a sense and desire to be liberated from the cruel and prejudicial treatment pervading not only the secular clergy but the Filipinos who rose in arms at that time.
February 17 1872 was a realization who Filipinos are and what they should be.
